Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has paid a visit to convicted musician and political activist Zainab Sheriff at the female correctional centre, expressing optimism about the outcome of her pending appeal.
In a brief statement following the visit, the Mayor noted that both she and Zainab Sheriff remain hopeful that the appeal will be successful, potentially paving the way for her to be released.
The visit comes at a particularly difficult time for Sheriff and her family, who are currently mourning the loss of her elder sister. The late sister is scheduled to be laid to rest on Thursday, 23rd July 2026.
Zainab Sheriff, widely known as a musician, model, and opposition political activist, was convicted in April 2026 on charges of incitement and using threatening language. She was subsequently sentenced to four years and two months’ imprisonment.
Her case has continued to draw public attention, with supporters closely monitoring developments surrounding her appeal.
