APC MP Aminata Sesay Raises Concerns Over Slow Unity Agreement Implementation

Hon. Aminata Sesay has called for greater political inclusivity in Sierra Leone’s peace efforts, urging the government to accelerate implementation of the unity agreement and ensure equal treatment under the law.

Speaking on SLIK TV, Sesay discussed the recently concluded National Unity and Social Cohesion Conference, stressing that peace efforts should involve citizens across political affiliations rather than focus primarily on supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).

She questioned the recognition given to conference participants, arguing that former President Ernest Bai Koroma should have received a prestigious peace award in recognition of his status as a former head of state, which she said would have demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity and national reconciliation.

On demonstrations and public order, Sesay said police conduct could contribute to violence during protests, maintaining that peaceful protest was a democratic right that should be respected regardless of citizens’ regional, religious or political affiliations. She added that the government must go beyond enacting laws and implementing policies to listen to public concerns and respond to citizens’ needs.

Addressing the case involving Zainab Sheriff, Sesay defended appeals for mercy on behalf of individuals facing legal consequences, arguing that musicians and other citizens should be able to appeal to the First Lady for consideration. She also cited the President’s constitutional power to grant pardons, arguing that Sheriff should be considered for such relief.

However, she stressed that the law should apply equally to Sheriff and others accused of similar offences. Sesay alleged that some SLPP supporters accused of serious crimes had been released without prosecution, raising concerns about consistency and accountability in the justice system. These allegations were not independently verified for this report.

Sesay also welcomed Port Loko District’s recognition as Sierra Leone’s second-most peaceful district, describing the distinction as a source of pride for her home district, which she identified as an opposition stronghold.

While acknowledging progress on the unity agreement, she expressed concern about the slow pace of implementation and warned that time was running out. She urged the government to take decisive action to fulfil its commitments, stressing that political inclusivity, respect for democratic rights and equal application of the law were essential to strengthening national unity.
