A prominent member of Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), Minkailu Koroma, has suggested that the party’s next flag bearer will likely be a younger candidate.
Speaking during an interview on AYV TV’s This Day programme, Koroma said the next APC leader is expected to be between 40 and 50 years old. He cited the growing number of young aspirants vying for the party’s top position ahead of the 2028 elections.
“I’ve seen a couple of young people with integrity and vast institutional knowledge,” he said, adding that many of them are also loyal to the party. Koroma said these individuals are well-qualified to lead and welcomed the idea of a youthful candidate, while extending best wishes to all contenders.
The Sierra Leone main opposition party is looking to reclaim power after suffering defeats to the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in both the 2018 and 2023 elections. Internal divisions have been blamed for the losses, and analysts warn that unresolved conflicts within the party could affect its chances again in 2028.
Historically, the APC has selected older candidates, with all presidential nominees since 2002 being over 50 years old. However, Koroma’s comments highlight a potential shift in strategy as younger members become more prominent in the party’s leadership race.

Why our politicians always choose leaders who are loyal to their party not the country
Is like they only care about the welfare of their political parties not the citizens in the Nation. Thy don’t even think how to develop this country all they want to know is the development of their political parties.
LET’S PUT THE COUNTRY FIRST.
