It will be an uphill task for the ruling SLPP party to persuade the APC to see reason in allowing the activation of an expected Instrument bothering on the the regulations for a District Block Representation or proportional representation electoral system.

As a matter of fact the expectation is coming through as accordingly, the APC Parliamentary Leader , Hon. CRM Bah has said: “ …I have been intimated about a proposal to enlarge Parliament to 135 seats and that the instruments seeking to change the electoral system from constituency based to proportional representation have been sent to Parliament.

As far as I am aware, none of these are before the House. Should they be brought before us, the APC will stand on its existing position on the PR system and will address the proposed parliamentary enlargement accordingly and in the best interest of our people and country.”

Apparently, the APC’s position is unambiguous, they don’t support the change of electoral system, but conversely so, it will take a two-third majority of 98 MPs to accept or reject the said Instrument when tabled with an objection, which is expected to be case.

Of notoriety, both the APC (59) and SLPP (58) don’t have the requisite number of legislators to do or undo this quite complex and controversial enactment.
