Tension escalates in the northern town of Mile 91 as SLPP lower-level elections are marred in violence between supporters and members of the two leading candidates for the Tonkolili District Chairmanship of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Ahmed Saybom Kanu and Mohamed Orman Bangura.
According to a viral video, a house reportedly belonging to the former Regent Chief of Yoni Mamaila was burnt last night. In the video, the house is seen in flames while properties worth millions in rubble.
Though its authenticity has not been verified, a voice was heard alleging the side of Ahmed Saybom Kanu, the current chairman and incumbent being behind the act. The speaker alleges Saybom of sending his boys to burn down the house.
Saybom is also not available to comment on the allegation.
The former Regent Chief, Yusif Barrie alias Atatie, whose house was reportedly burnt, is not picking up calls to ascertain whether his house was the one seen in flames in the video.
The Mile 91 Police Station is not immediately available for comment. All of the SLPP authorities in the area are not picking up calls.
However, multiple sources in Mile 91 have confirmed over the phone that the situation was chaotic and exposed residents to a security threat.
Meanwhile, a public notice from the SLPP Secretariat in Tonkolili District has postponed the election in the area pending investigation. the SLPP Secretary General in Tonkolili District, Robert Salia Kamara, has confirmed the violence in the area and the burning down of the house. But Kamara did not tell whose house was burnt and who was responsible.
Residents were left disturbed by the incident with some calling on the Sierra Leone Police to take action that will ensure their safety.
More details are coming.
