APC MP Ibrahim Barrie Criticises Government Policies, Demands Accountability in Presidential Address Debate
Opposition Member of Parliament, Hon. Ibrahim Barrie of the All People’s Congress (APC), has called for greater government accountability, improved economic management and tangible development results while delivering the opening contribution to the four-day debate on the President’s Address in Parliament.
Barrie, who was entrusted by the main opposition leadership to open the debate during the State Opening of the Fourth Session of the Sixth Parliament, used his contribution to examine key national issues affecting the livelihoods of Sierra Leoneans and propose recommendations to address them.
Focusing on the economy and the rising cost of living, the APC lawmaker argued that macroeconomic stability must translate into practical improvements in citizens’ lives, including affordable food, manageable transportation costs, increased purchasing power and better living conditions.
He also called for greater transparency in petroleum pricing, accountability in fuel subsidy management and a sustainable pricing framework that protects consumers while safeguarding public resources.
On agriculture, Barrie highlighted the need to strengthen the Government’s Feed Salone programme by investing in mechanisation, irrigation, storage facilities, processing and market access. He maintained that increasing agricultural production alone would not be sufficient without making locally produced rice competitive and improving farmers’ incomes.
Addressing the education sector, the opposition MP urged the Government to prioritise teachers’ welfare, including timely remuneration, professional development, motivation and improved working conditions. He described teachers as central to the success of the country’s education reforms and the future of its children.
On the growing drug crisis, Barrie advocated a comprehensive national response combining prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration, alongside stronger action against drug trafficking networks. He stressed the importance of providing young people with opportunities to rebuild their lives and contribute to national development.
The lawmaker also raised concerns about road infrastructure and safety, particularly along the Masiaka–Kabala corridor, calling for greater transparency in road contracts, timely project delivery, improved maintenance and stronger road safety measures.
On governance, transparency and accountability, Barrie emphasised the importance of parliamentary oversight, effective public institutions and responsible management of public resources. He further called for concrete action on the recommendations of the Auditor-General.
Barrie maintained that the Opposition’s responsibility extends beyond criticising the Government, noting that it must also scrutinise policies, identify implementation gaps, demand answers and offer constructive alternatives in the national interest.
He summarised his central message by stating that Sierra Leoneans need measurable results rather than more government announcements.
The APC MP reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the concerns and aspirations of residents of Bombali District and Sierra Leoneans generally remain central to parliamentary representation and national development.
He added that the Opposition would continue to support government policies and programmes that deliver meaningful benefits to citizens while demanding accountability where implementation falls short.
