Timothy Kabba, Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, has  introduced two Bills in Parliament for subsequent passage into law for the strengthening and enhancement of the mining and minerals sector for the beneficial development of the country.

The following Bills were introduced on first readings by the Minister of Mines: The National Minerals Agency Act 2021 and The Mines and Minerals Development Act, 2021.

The first Bill is seeking to provide for the continuance of the National Minerals Agency, to provide for a more effective and efficient management of the minerals sector through effective administration and regulation of mineral rights and trading in Sierra Leone including geological surveys and promoting the rights of communities and for other related matters.

 

The second Bill is seeking to provide for the repeal and replacement of the Mines and Minerals Act of 2009, to provide for the introduction of a new and  improved provisions for exploration, mines and minerals development, sale and export for the socio-economic benefits of the people of Sierra Leone, to provide for the facilitation of transparent and accountable governance of the minerals sector in accordance with international best practices, to provide for improved employment and to provide for improved welfare of communities affected by exploration among others.
