Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) National Public Relations Officer Moses Mambu has clarified that his recent reference to a possible 2030 election was made “out of fun” and was not a serious indication of when Sierra Leone’s next general election would be held.
Speaking on Truth Media, Mambu described the “2030 agenda” as a “political basketball” and said the remark was “just a jab.” His clarification follows earlier comments suggesting that the next election could take place in either 2028 or 2030, which sparked public discussion as the next general elections are currently expected in 2028.
Mambu reaffirmed the SLPP and government’s commitment to Sierra Leone’s democratic credentials and praised President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership.
He also separately suggested that Sierra Leone should consider extending the presidential tenure from five to seven years, arguing that the current five-year term is costly given the expense of conducting elections. However, he stressed that the proposal represents his personal opinion and not an announced government policy.
His comments have drawn criticism from opposition figures and some civil society organisations, with some expressing concerns that the remarks could signal an attempt by the ruling party to extend its stay in office.
