Former SLPP Chairman John Oponjo Benjamin Pledges Support to New Party Leadership
Osman Tolo Sesay Former National Chairman and Leader of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), John Oponjo Benjamin, has pledged his full support to the party’s new National Chairman, Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, during a courtesy visit to the party’s national headquarters in Freetown.
The meeting, held on Monday, June 29, focused on strengthening party unity, promoting reconciliation and reinforcing the SLPP’s preparedness ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr Benjamin congratulated Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa on his election and assumption of office, describing his emergence as an important milestone for the party. He expressed confidence in the new chairman’s leadership and assured him of his commitment to supporting the party’s programmes and objectives.
Highlighting the need for a united front, Mr Benjamin underscored the importance of mutual respect, inclusiveness, discipline and collective responsibility, stating that the continued growth and success of the SLPP depend on members working towards a shared vision.
As part of his support for the new leadership, the former party chairman donated five desktop computers, calculators and other office equipment to the National Secretariat to enhance its administrative capacity and improve day-to-day operations.
Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa welcomed the donation and thanked Mr Benjamin for his continued commitment to the party, describing the gesture as a timely contribution that would strengthen the Secretariat’s operational efficiency.
The two party leaders also discussed strategies for deepening internal cohesion, fostering reconciliation and consolidating unity across the SLPP. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to working with the party’s leadership, members and supporters to position the SLPP for success in the 2028 presidential, parliamentary and local council elections.
The meeting ended with both leaders expressing optimism about the future of the party and reiterating the importance of unity and effective leadership in advancing the SLPP’s goals.
