SLPP Government Will Be Voted Out in 2028 – Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr

Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has predicted that the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) will lose power in the 2028 general elections, saying the party will be voted out by the electorate.

Speaking in an interview on Liberty Online TV, Aki-Sawyerr said she was confident that the opposition could defeat the governing party despite the challenges it currently faces.

“In 2028, SLPP people will not be here because SLPP will be voted out,” she said.

The Mayor said the opposition’s ongoing legal battles and internal political challenges remained a concern as the country moves towards the next general elections. Despite those concerns, Aki-Sawyerr expressed confidence in the ability of citizens to influence political change.

“The power of the people is greater than the people in power,” she said, pointing to what she described as the level of suffering and regression experienced by citizens.

The Mayor also referred to The Economist, describing the publication as a globally recognised magazine that is widely read in professional and political circles. She recalled reading the publication as an economics student and later during her career in the financial services sector in the United Kingdom.

“The Economist is in everybody’s Bible. It is used across boardrooms. It’s used across political spaces,” she said.

Aki-Sawyerr also highlighted her work in local revenue mobilisation, saying initiatives introduced during her tenure at the Freetown City Council had been featured by the international publication.

“I’m proud to say when I bring in more tax, that was actually featured in The Economist as a revolutionary, innovative, sort of record-breaking new approach for revenue generation and collection at local council level,” she said.

She said the recognition demonstrated the significance of the council’s approach to improving revenue generation and collection.
