Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has said that it has begun investigations into how funds disbursed for the Sierra Leone Vs Benin match was spent.

it could be recalled that President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio through the Ministry of Finance approved over six billion Leones for the AFCON qualifying match between Sierra Leone and Benin played on Tuesday 15th June, 2021.

According to the ACC Deputy Director of Public Education and Outreach, Abu Bakar Turay, they have sent notices to the Ministry of Sports, National Sports Authority (NSA) Accountant General department in the Ministry of Finance and the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) to give an explanation on how funds disbursed by the government were expended.

Recall that the match which was originally rescheduled to Monday 14th June, 2021 did not hold after a few players in the Sierra Leone camp tested positive for COVID-19.

Just days before then, the Leone stars team were held at the Sierra Leone-Guinea border crossing point after they were refused entry to Guinea by the Guinean immigration officials for lack of COVID-19 test results.
