Cricket Sierra Leone suffered a heavy 94-run defeat to Kenya in their opening match of the 2026 Africa Continental Cup at the Gahanga Cricket Stadium Oval B in Kigali.
Kenya, who won the toss and elected to bat, posted a formidable 204 for seven from their allotted 20 overs before restricting Sierra Leone to 110 for seven in their reply.
Kenya’s innings was anchored by Rakep Patel, who struck 58 runs from 33 deliveries, including nine fours and a six. He received valuable support from Sukhdeep Singh, who made 45 from 34 balls with three fours and three sixes.
Brian Likavu added a quick 18 from seven balls, while Francis Mutua contributed 31 from 15 deliveries as Kenya maintained a strong scoring rate throughout the innings.
Sierra Leone’s bowlers managed to claim seven wickets, with Aliya Kamara taking two wickets for 23 runs and Samuel Conteh returning figures of two for 31. George Sesay and Solomon Williams also claimed a wicket each.
Chasing 205 for victory, Sierra Leone struggled to establish a strong partnership from the outset. Abu Kamara top-scored with 28 from 29 balls, while George Sesay remained unbeaten on 20 from 21 deliveries. Captain Lansana Lamin contributed 18 from 19 balls, including two sixes, but Sierra Leone could only reach 110 for seven after 20 overs.
Kenya’s bowling attack kept Sierra Leone under sustained pressure, with Shem Ngoche taking two wickets for just 11 runs from his four overs and Sachin Gill claiming two for 19. Lucas Oluoch and Vishil Patel also took a wicket apiece.
The result gives Kenya an emphatic start to their Africa Continental Cup campaign, while Sierra Leone will need to regroup and improve their batting and bowling performances as they continue their campaign in the regional T20 competition.
Sierra Leone’s 94-run loss underlines the challenge facing the side, which will now look to bounce back in its next fixture and put its campaign back on track.
