US Embassy Engages Kei Kamara on Sports Diplomacy and Youth Inspiration
The United States Embassy in Freetown has engaged legendary Sierra Leonean-American footballer Kei Kamara on the role of sports diplomacy in strengthening relations between the United States and Sierra Leone and inspiring young people.
According to the Embassy, the meeting focused on how sports can serve as a bridge between the two countries while creating opportunities to motivate and empower the next generation.
Kamara, a dual U.S.-Sierra Leonean citizen, represented Sierra Leone’s national football team 45 times during his international career. He also scored 147 regular-season goals in Major League Soccer (MLS) over a 20-year career, the second-highest total in the league’s history.

During his visit to the Embassy, Kamara met with Chargé d’Affaires Meghan Moore to discuss the potential of sports diplomacy in fostering stronger bilateral ties.
He also shared a light-hearted moment with Acting Public Affairs Officer Jeff Barrus, juggling a football during the visit.
The engagement highlights the potential of football and other sporting activities to promote cultural exchange, strengthen international relationships and inspire young people through the achievements of successful athletes.
The Embassy referenced the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28) in its post, highlighting the broader connection between sports and international engagement.
