The Minister of Sport, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh has updated the public on the current status of the National Stadium $40 million dollar refurbishment project

The minister started  by establishing that the National Stadium is the only standard stadium in the country. He pointed out that the Stadium was constructed by the Chinese and was commissioned in1979. He added that there are many activities that have taken place in terms of sports, Athletics, entertainment and other Social activities over the years.

The Minister Pointed out that the National Stadium is the baby project of the Chinese . He revealed that the job should have started long since but was on hold as a result of the Corona outbreak. He further confirmed that the project will Commence on February 26th 2022. He added that there will be a ground  breaking ceremony on the 25th and the work will effectively commence on the 26th.

He further confirmed that a majority of the equipment are in town whilst others are on their way coming through shipment. The Minister further revealed that the outbreak of the virus was very prevalent in China but he thanked  the Almighty God because the corona virus is not only subsiding in Africa but also in Europe. Fortunately, the Chinese are here to start the work

Minster Nyelenkeh considered the project as huge considering the money involved in terms of refurbishment. He further assured the public that the entire stadium will be given a face-lift. He pointed out that the hostels will be refurbished to host Leone Stars for international matches. He believes this will save the government extra money to pay  hotel bills for the provision of accommodation for the National team.

The Minister further revealed  that during the refurbishment, the Chinese will provide a brand new football pitch for the country. He Pointed out that the Chinese have previously done assessment on the soil sample for the placement of a sustainable pitch.

He further pointed out that the refurbished stadium will get  new tracks, natural turf, improvement of flood lights and a modern Score board. He  assured the public that there will be an expansion of the covered stand with chairs, improved Basketball and Volleyball Courts with pavilion where people will sit to enjoy the game
