British-Sierra Leonean athlete Jordan Aki-Sawyerr, son of Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, made a memorable debut for Sierra Leone at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday, delivering a commendable performance in the Men’s Triple Jump event at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.
Competing in Group A of the event, Aki-Sawyerr registered a best jump of 15.12 meters, finishing 13th in his group. His mark fell just 0.01 meters short of his personal best, highlighting a promising performance on his first appearance at the prestigious multi-sport competition.
Speaking after the event, Aki-Sawyerr described representing Sierra Leone on the international stage as a proud and unforgettable experience.
“It was a good feeling representing my beloved country, Sierra Leone,” he said. “I learnt a lot and gained huge experience at the Games. It will be a different result in future competitions. I wish to express appreciation to the sports authorities in Sierra Leone for believing in me and for selecting me for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.”
The athlete expressed confidence that the valuable experience gained in Glasgow would help him improve and achieve stronger performances in future international competitions.
Following his performance, the National Sports Authority (NSA) congratulated Aki-Sawyerr for his dedication and commitment, praising him for proudly representing Sierra Leone at the Commonwealth Games.
“The National Sports Authority congratulates Jordan on his debut and for flying Sierra Leone’s flag with pride on the Commonwealth stage,” the NSA said in a statement. “This experience will be key as we build towards future championships.”
Aki-Sawyerr’s Commonwealth Games debut is being viewed as an encouraging milestone for Sierra Leone athletics, with sports officials hopeful that his performance will contribute to the country’s preparations for future regional and international championships while inspiring more young athletes to compete at the highest level.
