Former Sierra Leone’s President, Ernes Bai Koroma has reacted as his country lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea and failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 round of 16.

Sierra Leone had needed a point to progress, but veteran striker Kei Kamara saw an 84th-minute penalty saved by Jesus Owono.

The late missed penalty was harsh on Kamara, the 37-year-old who had scored the winner against Sierra Leone last June which had Sierra Leone’s qualification for the tournament.

The former Norwich City and Middlesbrough man was handed the responsibility after Ganet had brought down Issa Kallon, but Owonu launched himself to his left to claw Kamara’s attempt past the post.

While reacting, Ernest Koroma said, “You did your best Kei Kamara, you’ve served well, no need to be too hard on yourself, others before you have served missed penalities. Leone Stars can build back from this and do better next time. Many thanks to the and Leone Stars.”
