The Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) finally elected a new executive on Saturday 9th April 2022 in Freetown.

The road to this all elective congress of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association was surrendered by controversies, ranging from its constitution amendment and adoption to court injunctions

Speaking to NewsFeed Sierra Leone after the election, the new president of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) Martin Bangura stated, “I have been into athletics for over twenty (20) years, and I was confident that, I have all it takes to change the SLAA, and I thank God for this achievement as it’s been a long journey for such change, a change that would have someone who has felt the pain of been an athlete and here I am today as the president of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association” he asserted.

He furthered that, his campaign message was “unity” as the Association was divided and he believed without “unity” all the good dreams for the Association would not be accomplished, no matter what development strategy one has.

“Now that the change is here, my first point of action is to call everyone irrespective of who you were supporting during the election to reconcile and be united as a family, and we start a new page of the SLAA to move athletics in the country and inclusiveness is another drive as the Vice president- 1 is from the Eastern Region, that speaks inclusiveness and nationalistic of the SLAA executive, of course, the Northern Region has been a hub for a crop of good athletes, on that note we should give attention to the North like any other part in Sierra Leone, my vision is LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND” President Bangura concluded.
