Sierra Stars has progressed to the semi-finals of the WAFU Under-17 competition following the disqualification of Liberia, the 3-0 win over the host nation Mauritania was also enough to top group A and will face the Group B runner-up Senegal in the semifinals on Friday, 7th October 2022.
Head Coach Mohamed Lamin Kamara revealed that they remain focused on accomplishing their mission in Mauritania which is to lift the trophy after guiding the team to reach the semifinals for the first time since the introduction of the MRI test in the tournament
” it means a lot for me, the team, and the entire country, as this is the first time since the introduction of MRI for our country to go beyond the group stage of this competition… and it tells you we are in the right direction to change the minds of people toward youth football” he asserted.
Adding, amid the difficult journey, the discipline, and determination demonstrated by his boys against Mauritania give him huge optimism in the quest to clinch the trophy” my target is to win the trophy and bring smiles to the faces of my people. I know it’s not going to be easy, but gradually we will reach there. Ameen” he noted.
Meanwhile, the finalists of the tournament will also earn a spot in the 2023 AFCON Under-17 competition which will be hosted in Algeria
