Mohamed Gento Kamara, the mayoral candidate for the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), announced his decision not to contest the disputed election results.

Kamara, who garnered significant support from a diverse range of constituents, expressed his gratitude to the people of Freetown while highlighting the various challenges that marred the electoral process.

Addressing his supporters, Kamara acknowledged the overwhelming turnout and their shared vision to bring about practical and inclusive change to the city.

The mayoral candidate emphasized the importance of unity and inclusivity, stating that the elections had transformed the conversation around who can participate in local politics, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.

However, Kamara revealed that the election had been tainted by systematic attempts to undermine the democratic process. He cited documented instances of bribery, intimidation, and assaults on polling agents, as well as ballot stuffing and attacks on his supporters in certain areas of the city. These illicit activities ultimately influenced the outcome of the election, leading to results that did not reflect the true will of the people.

“After consulting with my family and leaders of assistance. my party and in the interest of peace and harmony and for the love of my city. I have decided to not contest the skewed results,” Kamara stated.

He emphasized that this choice was made in the interest of peace, harmony, and love for the city of Freetown. Kamara urged his supporters to remain calm and assured them that alternative avenues would be explored to address the issues plaguing the city together.

In a display of sportsmanship, Kamara congratulated Yvonne Aki-Sawyer, who was declared the winner of the mayoral race, and wished her well in her future endeavors. He affirmed that the outcome of the election had sent a clear message that Freetown belongs to everyone and that every citizen has a stake in its development.

Despite conceding the election, Kamara promised to continue championing the interests of Freetown. He vowed to work tirelessly for the betterment of the city and pledged to utilize his blessings to support those in need.

Expressing gratitude for the unwavering love and support he received, Kamara concluded his statement by sending blessings to all the people of Freetown.

“Freetown people, be assured that I will never stop championing this city. I’ll never stop working for this city. And I’ll always use my blessings to support my people who need assistance,” he ended.
