MoHS Suspends Over 15 Health Workers For Neglecting a Poor Pregnant Woman

7 Sep 2023 • 2 min read • 8,005 views • 17 comments

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation have suspended over 15 Health workers following the death of a destitute pregnant woman and her unborn child.

The said woman was allegedly rejected in two hospitals in Freetown during her labor which led to her death and that of her unborn baby.

Giving brief fact of the matter, the Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) 1, Professor Charles Senessie, explained that while on routine check across various hospitals, he came to know of a tragic incident where a destitute woman was laying hopelessly, vomiting and bleeding at the Spur Road in Freetown.

He said a Medical doctor who was passing by intervened and informed the National Emergency Medical Service (NEMS), requesting that the woman be taken to a government hospital.

“The woman was then rushed to the Satellite Hospital at Kingharman Road and the Princess Christian Maternal Hospital (PCMH) at Cottage Hospital, respectively but was rejected by the health workers on duty and referred to the Rokupa Hospital at Wellington.” He added.

The Rokupa Hospital according to the Deputy Minister, accepted to take in the woman but the woman unfortunately died on the way.

“This poor demonstration of the work of the health care sector is unacceptable in our country. There are colleagues in the profession who are not up to the level of empathy and professional discharge of duty,”  Senesie stated.

He concluded that after the horrific incident, the professionals involved were summoned and disciplinary actions were taken, including the suspension of all practitioners who neglected the poor pregnant woman.

All those involve should be investigated and tried, with the possibility of losing their licences and facing jail time.
It can happen to anyone’s sister, mother or relative. Strong message should be sent that this is unacceptable.
May her Soul rest in peace.

Most of the health workers are not working in the interest of the nation, they are working for their self desire.

Oh my God!! This is very sad. But that is how most of the nurses more in the Government’s hospitals always behave. The same thing happen to me in 2019 prayday day that I will never forgive the nurses. My sister pregnancy in the 8 to 9 and it stops shaking but each time she goes to the hospital they will say the baby is ok. She complained this to me and I told her to keep going until her stomach pains her not knowing that the baby 👶 was dead and when she went to the G.hospital they said it time for delivery she was forced to deliver with out consulting the doctor and she died.

This story run me in shock and tears. The said ferocious , stone hearted inconsiderate and heartless so-called nurses and their in charge who contributed to the death of the deceased pregnant woman and her unborn child at those hospitals that rejected to admit her for care, should all be sacked effective immediately and be suspended off their practice in this country for five years.
Suspension is not enough but laying them off will be the best , so that it will serve as a deterrent for the practising nurses across the country.
This is because the falling of a dry leaf serves as a caution to the green ones.

This is the reason why plo Lumumba once said that most politians do not trust both health and educational systems as most of them prefer to go abroad for medical tourism and send their kids abroad for better education ooooh God save sierra Leone
