Sierra Leone Confirms Cases of Salmonella Diarrhoeal Illness in Falaba
Osman Koroma Sierra Leone’s National Public Health Agency (NPHA) has confirmed cases of Salmonella Diarrhoeal illness in Falaba District, according to a press release issued by the agency.
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, and vomiting. While most Salmonella infections are mild and clear up without treatment, some cases can be severe and require hospitalization. The infection is commonly spread through contaminated food or water.
The press release follows reports of a cluster of severe diarrhoeal illnesses in Falaba District. Health officials confirmed the presence of Salmonella bacteria in stool samples collected from two patients.
“Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and fever,” the NPHA stated in the press release. “More testing is underway to learn more about this outbreak. Health officials are urging residents to take steps to protect themselves.”
As a public health precaution, the NPHA is advising residents of Falaba District to:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially before handling food.
- Practice good hygiene and sanitation.
- Visit the nearest health facility immediately if experiencing severe diarrhea or vomiting.
- Report any unusual health concerns in the community by calling 117.
The NPHA, the Ministry of Health, and other partners are working together to address the situation and protect public health in Falaba District.
