Umaru Fofona Warns Against Electing President, VP And Speaker of Parliament From Same District
Sorie Abubakar Popular Journalist and Media Owner, Umaru Fofona has warned against having a President, Vice President, and Speaker of Parliament from the same district.
Fofona shared his thoughts on Facebook as the Parliament of Sierra Leone convenes on Thursday to elect new leadership following the retirement and resignation of Former Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu.
The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has presented Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas from Bonthe District as its candidate for the election while the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) has nominated Hon. Daniel Brima Koroma from Koinadugu district.
President Julius Maada Bio hails from Bonthe District, fueling speculations of having the same District in the office of the President and Speaker if the SLPP’s Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas is elected
Voting is currently underway in the house of Parliament where 149 members are eligible to vote.
According to Fofona, it is fair and good for national cohesion that the country’s leadership are not from the same district.
“In the absence of the President, the Vice President is President. In the absence of the both of them, the Speaker is President. In my view, it is therefore just fair and good for national cohesion, especially at a time like this, for two of those three NOT to come from the same district. Not everything that is legal that is fair.” Fofona wrote.

Sierra Leone is a democracy. Why are people talking of fixing outside the democratic principles. I think the politicians will learn a lesson. That they are representing the whole country. So they should learn ti campaign in the entire country. So they may get representatives from everywhere.
But the idea that the president, vice and speaker coming from the same area shouldn’t be a problem.
I remember, when Foday Sankoh insisted on the position of vice president, the political class that time said, the country must follow the constitution. Why should anyone trying for anything other than the constitution.
