A disastrous fire engulfed the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) of the Makeni Regional Hospital on the morning of Friday, 11th April 2025, in Makeni, Bombali District.
The severity of the situation had already escalated leaving the whole structure in intense fire before the emergency services responded at the scene, but the extent of the casualties or loss of lives is yet to be confirmed.
Report has it that the Special Care Baby Unit is a critical facility that provides neonatal care, including oxygen therapy for premature and critically sick infants. In 2021, oxygen plant was reportedly installed at the facility to support such services.
The situation, which sparked in the night hours of Friday morning, left the service providers and patients in a total disarray, as there was no support from neither fire fighters, nor community members to quench the blazing fire, leaving the entire structure swallowed up by the fire.
