APC MP Calls for Renewed Investigation into 2018 Gang Rape Case in Kailahun District
The case of Satta Lamin, a young woman who was gang-raped by more than six men in 2018 in Kailahun District, resurfaced during the All People’s Congress (APC) Monthly Parliamentary Press Briefing.
Hon. Lucinda Finda Kellie, a Member of Parliament from Kono District, addressed the media and spoke passionately about the trauma the incident has caused, particularly for women across Sierra Leone.
Hon. Kellie stated that Satta Lamin was targeted because of her political beliefs and allegiance to the APC. She described the attack as a severe violation of human rights and dignity.
“We, the women of this nation, will never get peace of mind if the respect and dignity of Satta Lamin continues to be ignored,” said Hon. Kellie.
The MP called for renewed investigations into the case and urged all government authorities, women’s rights organizations, and the international community to stand with victims of politically motivated gender-based violence in the country.
Satta Lamin’s case remains one of the most disturbing in recent memory, as it represents the dangerous mix of political intolerance and gender violence in Sierra Leone. The incident was taken to the ECOWAS Court where the victim sought justice.
Since the event in 2018, the APC has continually called for justice in the case, which they see as a violation of Lamin’s rights. The party is not only seeking justice for the rape victim but has also been calling for electoral justice.
While the APC leadership has agreed to move forward, many of the party’s supporters continue to be affected by the aftermath of the 2023 general elections, with some believing that justice for Satta Lamin can only be achieved if the party wins the 2028 elections.
This is an alleged, horrible abuse against the sister. The event was reported in 2018, some 7 years ago. I understand this case was investigated by the Sierra Leone Police in 2018. What was the outcome of the investigation? Madam honorable, please continue to put pressure, even though such effort may appear to be too little, too late. Thank you honorable.
