The Minister of Transport and Aviation, Honorable Alhaji Fanday Turay, provided support to former members of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces as the Christmas season approaches.
The assistance included 25kg bags of rice and cash, distributed to ex-soldiers at two locations: Benguema in the Western Area Rural, and the Youyi Building in Freetown for beneficiaries in the Western Area Urban.
Speaking during the distribution, Minister Turay, who is himself a former soldier, said the support is intended to assist ex-military personnel during festive periods. He noted that similar distributions are carried out annually during Christmas and the holy month of Ramadan.
Recipients expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting that the support helps to ease some of the challenges they face, particularly during the holiday season. Many of them said it provides timely relief amid rising living costs and difficult economic conditions.
Observers say the initiative reflects ongoing efforts to maintain connections between former members of the armed forces and the government, especially in ensuring that their welfare needs are addressed.
