The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in Motema Town, Kono District, has launched a new year community engagement program aimed at strengthening community policing and building closer partnerships with schools and local communities.

The initiative is being led by the Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Motema Police Division, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Mohamed Turay. According to the police, the programme is designed to promote a safe and supportive learning environment through education, dialogue, and sports.

The celebration features a series of academic and sporting activities, including quiz, debate, and football competitions, involving 10 selected secondary schools within the Motema Police Division. The program specifically targets school pupils as part of efforts to deepen understanding of community policing principles and encourage cooperation between young people and law enforcement.

Police sources said the academic aspect of the program was held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, with a highly competitive quiz competition. Participating schools included Yengema Secondary School, Jaiama Secondary School, and Kono Model Academy. The quiz focused on general knowledge, civic education, and issues related to peace and security.

The debate competition was held on Friday, January 23, 2026. It focused on themes such as community policing, crime prevention, and civic responsibility, with the aim of encouraging pupils to think critically about their role in maintaining peace and security in their communities.

In addition to the academic events, the program will include a football competition among the participating schools. The police said the sporting activities are intended to promote unity, discipline, teamwork, and positive interaction between students and the police.

The program is expected to conclude on Saturday, February 7, 2026, with an awards ceremony and dinner at Diamond Lodge. Police said, outstanding students, schools, police officers, and other stakeholders will be recognised for their contributions to the success of the initiative during the ceremony.

According to the Motema Police Division, the programme reflects the Division’s continued commitment to innovative community engagement as a tool for promoting peace, security, and cooperation in Kono District. The police noted that strengthening relationships with schools and young people remains a key part of their community policing strategy.
