Government of Sierra Leone Increases Price of Fuel Effective Immediately
The Government of Sierra Leone, through the National Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA), has announced an immediate increase in the pump price of petroleum products for January 2026.
According to the new “Petroleum Pricing Regime” released by the Authority, the retail price for both petrol and diesel has risen from NLe 25 to NLe 28.50 per litre.
The pricing adjustment affects all categories of petroleum products. The approved pump prices effective immediately are as follows:
Petrol: NLe 28.50 per litre
Diesel: NLe 28.50 per litre
Kerosene: NLe 26.76 per litre
Fuel Oil: NLe 25.98 per litre
The NPRA pricing structure indicates that the new prices are derived from a combination of global market costs and domestic economic factors. The breakdown cites the “Average Platts Prices” (FOB MED) ranging between $626 and $636 USD per metric ton for diesel and petrol respectively.
Additionally, the pricing regime factors in an exchange rate adjustment of 23.78 Le/USD. The final pump price also includes specific levies, such as the Road User Charge (NLe 1.00) and the Infrastructure Development Fund (IDF), which is set at NLe 2.64 per litre for petrol.
The NPRA noted that the government’s policy remains applicable to all “large Uplifters” and that payments for these categories continue to be denominated in USD.
This increase represents a significant upward adjustment from the previous NLe 25 threshold, a move likely to impact transportation fares and the cost of goods and services nationwide.
