The Office of the President has commenced formal consultations with registered political parties regarding the proposed appointment of Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone.
In a letter dated 10 February 2026 from State House, Tower Hill, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Barba B. Fortune, the President referenced Section 32(3) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6 of 1991). The provision states that members of the Electoral Commission are appointed by the President after consultation with the leaders of all registered political parties and subject to the approval of Parliament.
According to the correspondence, His Excellency the President has informed political party leaders of his intention to appoint Mr. Alpha and has requested their views on the proposed nomination. Political parties have been given three working days from the date of the letter to submit their responses.
The letter was addressed to the leadership of several registered political parties, including the All People’s Congress (APC), Alliance Democratic Party (ADP), Citizens Democratic Alliance (C4C), National Democratic Alliance (NDA), National Grand Coalition (NGC), National Progressive Democratic Party (NPDP), National Unity and Reconciliation Party (NURP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peace and Liberation Party (PLP), People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), and the Republic National Independent Party (ReNIP).
