The first meeting of the ECOWAS Judicial Council to be hosted in Sierra Leone has commenced under the chairmanship of Honourable Chief Justice Komba Kamanda where he received commendations from colleague Chief Justices, eminent judges, and Commissioners of the ECOWAS Commission.
In his opening remarks, the Honourable Chief Justice welcomed delegates and expressed appreciation for their attendance at the statutory meeting, convened pursuant to Rule 6(1) and (2) of the Council’s Governing Rules.
The ECOWAS Judicial Council was established pursuant to Decision A/DEC.2/06/06, adopted by the Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The decision integrated the Council into the ECOWAS institutional structure, ensuring that the appointment of judges transitions from purely political selection to a more merit-based and peer-reviewed process.
The meeting is scheduled to run from 20th to 24th April 2026.
