In a despicable and deeply mischievous act, someone has forged an official-looking press release from the All People’s Congress (APC) falsely announcing the death of former President Ernest Bai Koroma.

The document, dated April 28, 2026, and bearing the party’s letterhead, claims he passed away today at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. It even includes fake signatures from APC National Secretariat officials. This is a cruel lie.

Former President Koroma is alive and well. No credible news outlet, government statement, or official APC communication has confirmed any such tragedy. The forgery is nothing more than a vicious digital hoax designed to spread grief, sow confusion, and destabilize the political landscape.

This is not harmless mischief. It is a calculated assault on the dignity of a former head of state, his family, and the millions of Sierra Leoneans. Imagine the pain inflicted on his loved ones, who would have been thrown into immediate panic by the news. Imagine the shock and sorrow rippling through APC members and supporters across the country and the diaspora. Such deliberate falsehoods weaponize our emotions and erode trust in institutions at a time when Sierra Leone needs unity and stability, not manufactured drama.

The perpetrator, whether acting alone or as part of a coordinated effort, has shown contempt for basic human decency. In an era where misinformation travels at the speed of a click, this kind of forgery is not just unethical, it is dangerous. It cheapens real loss, trivializes genuine national mourning, and poisons public discourse.

We condemn this act in the strongest possible terms. Those responsible must be identified and held accountable under the law. Social media platforms and messaging groups circulating this fake document should remove it immediately. The APC and relevant authorities should issue clear, immediate rebuttals to put this malicious rumour to rest.

Ernest Bai Koroma does not deserve grotesque fabrications about his death. This hoax reveals more about the character of its creator than it ever could about the former president. It is beneath us as a nation. Let it be rejected with the contempt it deserves.
