A tragic incident has been reported in Taiama Town, Kori Chiefdom, Moyamba District, where a Secondary School SSS 1 pupil of Taiama Secondary School, identified as Mamie, allegedly drowned in the Taia River on Saturday, 16 May 2026.

The incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. when the pupil, who had been staying with her aunt at Main Junction in Taiama, reportedly went to the river with friends to wash clothes. According to community sources, after completing the laundry, she is said to have entered the river to bathe.

It was during this time that she allegedly went missing beneath the water, prompting concern among her peers. Her friends later returned home and informed her aunt about the incident, sparking alarm within the household and wider community.

An overnight search operation was launched by community members, but initial efforts did not yield results. However, on Sunday, 17 May 2026, her body was reportedly recovered from the river.

Following the recovery, the remains were conveyed to her hometown, Tinkonko in Bo District, where burial arrangements are expected to take place.

The incident has left residents of Taiama and surrounding communities in deep shock and mourning. Community members have since called on parents and guardians to closely monitor children and caution them about the dangers of rivers and other water bodies, particularly during the rainy season.

Authorities and community stakeholders are expected to continue emphasizing water safety awareness as similar incidents continue to raise concern across rural riverine areas.
