The Parliament of Sierra Leone has celebrated the election of two of its Members of Parliament, Hon. Rosemarie Bangura and Hon. Bashiru Silikie, to key regional leadership positions within continental parliamentary bodies.
Hon. Rosemarie Bangura was elected Vice Chairperson of the West African Regional Caucus, while Hon. Bashiru Silikie secured the position of Rapporteur of the Committee on Cooperation, International Relations and Conflict Resolution at the Pan-African Parliament.
Congratulating the two lawmakers, the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Segepoh Solomon Thomas, called on Members of Parliament to take pride in the achievements of their colleagues, describing their elections as significant milestones for both Parliament and the country.
Speaker Thomas noted that Hon. Bashiru Silikie currently serves as the Leader of Sierra Leone’s Delegation to the Pan-African Parliament and stated that his election as Rapporteur reflects his dedication, hard work, and outstanding representation of Sierra Leone at the continental level.
“These are very serious positions, and as a Parliament we should be proud of our colleagues for being elected to those positions. Thank you for ably representing this Parliament and, by extension, the Republic of Sierra Leone,” Speaker Thomas stated.
The Speaker further commended the commitment and diligence demonstrated by both Hon. Rosemarie Bangura and Hon. Bashiru Silikie, urging other Members of Parliament to emulate their example.
He also referenced a recent fact-finding mission to South Africa, which he led to assess the performance of Sierra Leonean representatives in international parliamentary engagements, noting that the country’s lawmakers continue to make remarkable contributions on the international stage.
Speaker Thomas further disclosed that the Pan-African Parliament regularly consults the leadership of Sierra Leone’s delegation on key continental matters.
“For that reason, the Sixth Parliament under my leadership is very proud of Hon. Rosemarie Bangura and Hon. Bashiru Silikie for achieving such feats at the international level,” he said.
The announcement was greeted with loud applause in Parliament as Members of the House celebrated the international recognition attained by the two lawmakers.
