Mr. Mohamed Kenewui Konneh, former Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), has been appointed as the Permanent Representative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Liberia.
Konneh’s appointment represents a transition from electoral leadership to regional diplomacy. During his tenure at the ECSL, he oversaw Sierra Leone’s 2023 presidential and parliamentary elections and contributed to efforts aimed at strengthening electoral governance. He also served as Chairperson of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), where he supported initiatives to enhance electoral cooperation and institutional reforms among member states.
In his new role, Konneh will serve as ECOWAS’ principal representative in Liberia, working closely with the Liberian government to advance the organisation’s priorities, including peace and security, regional integration, and democratic governance.
His appointment comes as ECOWAS continues efforts to promote stability and cooperation across West Africa, particularly within the Mano River Union region.
Konneh’s new role further highlights Sierra Leone’s contribution to regional leadership, following the country’s hosting of the 69th ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government Summit.
With his experience in electoral management and governance, Konneh is expected to support stronger ECOWAS-Liberia relations and contribute to the organisation’s mandate of promoting peace, democracy, and development across the sub-region.
