Sierra Leone’s Parliament has hosted the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, during the ongoing ECOWAS Mid-Year Statutory Meetings in Freetown.
The engagement focused on strengthening collaboration between ECOWAS institutions and national legislatures, with discussions centred on democracy, regional integration, peace, and security across West Africa.
Dr. Touray was accompanied by senior ECOWAS officials, including Ambassador John Azumah, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, and Mr. Abdou Kolley. They met with Sierra Leone’s parliamentary leadership to discuss ways of enhancing cooperation between the regional body and member states’ legislatures.
The Sierra Leone delegation was led by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, alongside Majority Leader Hon. Matthew Sahr Nyuma, Deputy Leader of Government Business Hon. Basiru Silikie, and Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay. Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Billay Tunkara of The Gambia, also attended the meeting.
During the discussions, lawmakers highlighted the important role of parliaments in promoting democratic governance, strengthening institutions, and addressing political and security challenges within the region.
Sierra Leone’s Parliament expressed appreciation for ECOWAS’ continued support in promoting peace and democratic stability in the country. Dr. Touray acknowledged Sierra Leone’s contribution to regional stability and reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting democratic institutions across West Africa.
The meeting formed part of activities marking the ECOWAS Mid-Year Statutory Meetings being hosted in Sierra Leone.
