Ten men have been reportedly remanded to the Freetown Male Correctional Centre after appearing before Pademba Road Court No. 1 on allegations of stealing a detained shipping container from the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown.
The accused are Abu Bakarr Kabba Mansaray, Ibrahim Ahmed Kargbo, Ibrahim Bangura, Benito Conteh, Mohamed Amara Kamara, Alhassan Kamara, Jacob Gbaya, Mohamed Sahr Tommy, Chernor Amadu Sesay and Abu Mansaray.
According to the prosecution, the defendants allegedly conspired between 1 and 22 May 2026 to unlawfully remove a shipping container bearing serial number TLLU 2297785 from the Freetown Water Quay.
The container and its contents were reportedly being held by the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) as part of an ongoing police investigation.
The prosecution informed the court that the accused are facing five charges: conspiracy to commit larceny, larceny, forgery, uttering forged documents, and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Court proceedings heard that the ninth accused, Chernor Amadu Sesay, allegedly forged a staff identity card belonging to Akim and Satu Clearing and Forwarding Agency on 15 May 2026. Prosecutors allege the forged identification was used to facilitate the unlawful removal of the detained container from the port.
No pleas were entered because the matter is before the court by way of committal proceedings.
Defence lawyers Brima Koroma, Maddieu Sesay and Jessica M. Jengo applied for bail, arguing that the accused are Sierra Leonean residents with identifiable addresses and credible sureties who would not interfere with investigations.
However, Principal Magistrate Mustapha Brima Jah refused the bail applications, citing the seriousness of the offences and the circumstances surrounding the case.
State Prosecutor Yusuf Isaac Sesay requested a brief adjournment to complete the prosecution’s case file before the matter is transferred to the High Court.
The magistrate granted the application, remanded all ten accused to the Freetown Male Correctional Centre, and adjourned the matter to 21 July 2026 for further proceedings.
