The College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), University of Sierra Leone, has released its official admission criteria for prospective students seeking entry into the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programme.
According to the guidelines, applicants may gain entry into the MBChB programme either through successful completion of the COMAHS premedical programme or by direct entry, subject to meeting the stipulated requirements. The College emphasised that final selection of all candidates will depend on a successful performance at an interview.
Premedical Programme Requirements
For admission into the COMAHS premedical programme, candidates must obtain at least five WASSCE credits (C5 or better) in English Language, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics or Further Mathematics, and Physics in not more than two sittings, or possess an equivalent qualification.
Applicants who achieve an aggregate score of not more than 10 in the required subjects will be admitted into Premed 2, while those with an aggregate of not more than 15 will be placed in Premed 1.
Additionally, candidates with GCE Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level results scoring between grades A and C in any two of the following subjects-Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics- will qualify for admission to Premed 1. Knowledge of French is considered an added advantage.
Direct Entry into MBChB
Candidates seeking direct entry into the MBChB programme must meet one of the following criteria:
Applicants must possess GCE Advanced Level (A-Level) results with grades A to C in any two of the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings or its equivalent.
Alternatively, graduates holding a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Division II in a science-related discipline from a recognised university may also apply.
However, such candidates must have previously obtained five WASSCE credits or their equivalent prior to applying for the programme.
COMAHS further noted that proficiency in French remains an added advantage for all applicants.
