The Resident Minister of the South, Chief John Abu, has revealed that authorities have in the past taken disciplinary action against some Poro Society members to prevent the forced initiation of individuals into secret societies, including the Bondo Society.
Chief John Abu made the statement today during an interview with Truth Media, where he addressed concerns surrounding traditional practices and the need to respect individuals’ freedom of choice.
According to the Resident Minister, the government does not support any form of force or intimidation used to compel people into joining secret societies. He explained that measures have previously been taken against individuals found engaging in such practices.
Chief Abu emphasised that while traditional institutions remain part of Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage, their activities must respect the rights and decisions of citizens. He noted that community leaders and traditional authorities have a responsibility to promote peace, respect, and responsible cultural practices that do not infringe on the freedoms of others.
The Resident Minister further stated that protecting citizens from forced participation in secret societies is part of broader efforts to maintain social harmony and uphold the rule of law. His comments come amid continued national discussions on traditional societies, cultural practices, and the protection of individual rights across Sierra Leone.
