The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has presented a mobile phone belonging to murder accused Abdul Kpaka as evidence before the High Court, marking a significant development in the ongoing trial.

The device, which was earlier seized during police investigations, was formally handed over in court as part of the prosecution’s evidentiary materials. The move comes amid indications from the defense that digital communications extracted from the phone will form a key component of their case.

Abdul Kpaka is currently facing a two-count indictment of murder and perverting the course of justice. He is accused of allegedly killing Sia Kamara on August 15, 2024.

During the latest proceedings, defense counsel Emmanuel Teddy Koroma informed the court that the defense intends to rely heavily on messages retrieved from the device, including WhatsApp and text conversations.

According to him, exchanges between the accused and the deceased identified in court as Sia Fatu Karama are expected to be central to the defense’s argument.

To ensure proper handling of the digital evidence, the defense requested that the Judiciary’s Information Technology Department be subpoenaed to assist in extracting and presenting the data in line with established legal and technical standards governing electronic evidence.

Koroma also told the court that the prosecution had already been formally notified of the defense’s intention to rely on the phone records, emphasizing the importance of adhering to evidentiary procedures.

In addition, the defense applied for an adjournment to allow adequate time to prepare for the next phase of the trial, particularly in relation to the analysis and presentation of the digital material.

Following submissions from both the prosecution and defense, the court granted the application and adjourned the matter to April 29 for further hearing.

The case continues to draw public interest, with digital evidence now expected to play a pivotal role as proceedings advance.
