All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer aspirant, Lawyer Ady Macauley, has rejected claims that Sierra Leone’s First Past the Post (FPTP) electoral system is responsible for election-related violence, arguing that the country has previously conducted by-elections under the system without violence.
Lawyer Macauley made the statement today, Monday 27th July 2026, during an interview with Truth Media, where he shared his views on Sierra Leone’s electoral system and expressed his disagreement with the Proportional Representation (PR) system.
The APC flagbearer aspirant argued that the First Past the Post system should not be blamed for political tensions or violence, noting that previous by-elections conducted under the system were peaceful. He maintained that challenges associated with elections should not be attributed solely to the voting system, but rather addressed through broader improvements in political conduct, institutions, and democratic processes.
Macauley further expressed his disapproval of the Proportional Representation system, stating his preference for the First Past the Post model, which has been used in previous electoral processes in Sierra Leone. His comments come amid ongoing national discussions about electoral reforms and the most suitable system for ensuring fair representation, transparency, and peaceful democratic participation ahead of future elections.
