Jagaban’s $3 Million Bus Fleet Set for Public Rollout After Clearance at Freetown Port

A privately financed public transportation project has moved closer to operation after 25 new buses cleared customs at Queen Elizabeth II Quay, paving the way for the launch of a service intended to improve commuter travel across Sierra Leone.

The fleet was funded by philanthropist Mohamed Omodu Kamara, widely known as Jagaban, who invested $3 million in the initiative as part of efforts to address ongoing transportation challenges affecting commuters nationwide.

According to information released on the project, preparations began in July 2025 with the procurement of buses in China. Jagaban personally inspected and acquired 16 customized 60-seater buses manufactured by Yutong Bus, while an additional nine buses were sourced from Golden Dragon because they were considered more suitable for operations in rural communities.

Project organizers said shipping arrangements were completed in September 2025 through Ronghao Motor, and the buses arrived in Freetown in July 2026. The fleet was officially cleared on July 29, allowing the project to move into its next phase.

Jagaban has described the initiative as a “game-changer” for economic growth, emphasizing that reliable transit is essential for accessing healthcare and education.

Beyond expanding transportation services, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities for drivers, conductors, technicians, and administrative personnel. Organizers also plan to provide professional training at a dedicated bus depot that is currently being finalized.

The project further announced that passengers will receive free transportation during the first two months of operations as part of efforts to ease commuting costs for citizens.

With customs clearance completed, attention has now shifted to completing the depot and recruiting staff before the buses begin operating. The initiative is expected to increase the availability of public transportation while improving affordability for commuters, particularly in Freetown.
