Alpha Sesay Dismisses Claims Amendment Bill Will Remove ECSL Commissioners
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, has assured the public that the proposed constitutional amendment bill will not affect the tenure of the current leadership of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), including Chairman Edmond Alpha and other commissioners.
Speaking during a recent media engagement, Sesay said the proposed changes, particularly the establishment of a search and nomination committee for future appointments, would not disrupt the tenure of commissioners currently serving on the electoral body.
He explained that the proposal is based on recommendations from the Tripartite Committee, which called for a more structured and transparent process for appointing ECSL officials in the future.
According to Sesay, if the amendment is approved by Parliament, the current commissioners will be recognised as having been appointed in line with the new framework, meaning their positions will remain unaffected.
“They will continue in office,” Sesay stated, adding that commissioners whose tenure extends to the next general election will be responsible for overseeing the electoral process.
The Attorney General dismissed claims that the amendment would result in the removal of current ECSL officials, describing such claims as false.
“If anyone tells you that once this proposal comes into effect these persons will be removed, that person is lying to you,” he emphasised.
Sesay’s clarification comes amid ongoing public debate over the proposed constitutional amendment and concerns about its possible implications for the independence and structure of the country’s electoral management body.
