Five Sierra Leonean fishermen were rescued from a sinking boat off the coast of Freetown on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, after a Chinese fishing vessel responded to their distress signals during severe weather conditions.
The vessel, identified as YuanYu708, was conducting routine operations when its captain, Wang Pingchao, noticed signs of distress from a local fishing boat that was taking on water amid heavy rain and rough seas.
According to reports, the Chinese vessel immediately suspended its fishing activities and headed toward the scene at full speed. By the time the crew arrived, the local boat had already sunk, leaving the five fishermen struggling in the water without adequate life-saving equipment.
The crew of YuanYu708 activated emergency rescue procedures and successfully pulled all five men from the sea. The rescued fishermen were later provided with dry clothing, food, drinking water, and basic medical attention on board the vessel.
Company management was informed of the incident and coordinated additional support by dispatching another vessel, Chang Rong-3, carrying medical personnel to assist the survivors.
After the rescue operation, the required reports were submitted to Sierra Leone’s maritime and fisheries authorities. Officials from the Sierra Leone Navy and local media representatives subsequently visited the vessel and commended the crew for their prompt response and professionalism.
The successful rescue prevented what could have been a fatal maritime tragedy and has been widely viewed as a significant act of humanitarian assistance at sea.
