The Executive Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mohamed Alphaka Conteh Esq., has paid a courtesy visit to the Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone National Commission for UNESCO, Dr Mohamed C. Kamanda, at the Commission’s headquarters at Tower Hill in Freetown, as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration in the development of sports in Sierra Leone.
Welcoming the newly appointed NSA Executive Director, Dr Kamanda congratulated Mr Conteh on his appointment and highlighted the pivotal role of the National Commission for UNESCO in serving as a bridge between UNESCO Headquarters and Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including the Ministries of Sports and Technical and Higher Education.
Dr Kamanda noted that the Commission has maintained a productive relationship with the NSA over the years and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Authority in advancing sports development initiatives across the country.
He emphasized that UNESCO remains committed to providing technical expertise and advisory support for sports-related programmes and projects, adding that sports occupy an important place within UNESCO’s broader mandate of promoting education, culture, science, and youth development.
The Secretary-General further described the National Sports Authority as a key institution within President Julius Maada Bio’s administration and underscored the importance of sustained collaboration in harnessing the transformative power of sports for national development.
Responding, Mr Conteh expressed appreciation to Dr Kamanda and his team for the warm reception and pledged the NSA’s readiness to work closely with the Commission in pursuing shared objectives.
He called for continued support from UNESCO, stressing that the Authority’s needs extend beyond anti-doping initiatives and the promotion of African Traditional Games and Sports.
“NSA needs your support beyond anti-doping and the African Traditional Games and Sports. I wish to present myself to you as your younger brother for guidance and strategic direction,” Mr Conteh stated.
The NSA Executive Director further disclosed that the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority intend to engage the Commission in future discussions aimed at developing project proposals for submission to UNESCO for consideration and possible support.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation and exploring new opportunities to advance sports development and youth empowerment in Sierra Leone.
