Karefa A.F. Kargbo is a Sierra Leonean politician, diplomat and accountant with decades of experience spanning government, diplomacy, the petroleum sector, finance and public sector management.
Born in August 1967, Kargbo has held several senior positions in government, including serving as Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation during the country’s military rule in the 1990s.
Former Foreign Affairs Minister
Kargbo served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from 1993 to 1994 under the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) government led by then military leader Valentine Strasser.
During his tenure, he represented Sierra Leone at the 48th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in 1993.
His experience in diplomacy placed him at the centre of Sierra Leone’s international engagements during a politically challenging period in the country’s history.
Experience In The Petroleum Sector
Kargbo later moved into the petroleum and financial management sectors, where he held senior technical positions.
Under the administration of former President Ernest Bai Koroma, he was appointed Chief Accountant at the Petroleum Resources Unit (PRU).
He subsequently served as Financial Controller in the Accounting Department of the Petroleum Directorate from August 2011 to January 2016.
His work in the petroleum sector gave him experience in financial management, accounting and administration within one of Sierra Leone’s strategically important sectors.
Military And Professional Background
Before his political and public-sector career, Kargbo served in the Sierra Leone Armed Forces.
He is also a certified public accountant, with professional experience in finance, corporate governance and public-sector management.
His combination of military, diplomatic, accounting and public-sector experience has shaped a career spanning several decades.
