Former Social Welfare Minister and opposition politician Sylvia Blyden has criticised the Chief Executive Officer of Summa Group and founder of FB Group, Fatih Bora, over what she described as his failure to publicly express condolences following a landslide at the Hilton Airport Hotel construction site in Lungi that reportedly claimed at least two lives.
The victims were reportedly working on the Hilton Airport Hotel project being constructed by FB Group when the incident occurred.
Following the incident, Blyden took to Facebook to question Bora’s apparent silence, particularly towards the families of the deceased.
“Fatih Bora, who lives in Turkey with (his) wife and two children has not published any sympathy or regrets to the wives and children of the deceased or to Sierra Leoneans as a whole,” Blyden wrote.
She described the situation as “a pity,” while questioning the circumstances surrounding the emergence of FB Group and its involvement in the airport hotel project.
Blyden also drew attention to the company’s emergence following Summa Group’s construction of the Freetown International Airport Terminal in Lungi and the subsequent agreement with Hilton to construct an airport hotel.
Hilton Hotels said the Hilton Airport Hotel is being developed as a major hospitality project at the airport, describing the planned facility as Sierra Leone’s first airport hotel and one intended to combine local culture with modern standards.
The tragedy has meanwhile renewed concerns about occupational and construction-site safety, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Families of the victims are awaiting further information as authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the landslide, including the safety conditions at the construction site and the factors that may have contributed to the incident.
