Police in Port Loko have reportedly recovered two heavily rusted AK-47 rifles believed to have been buried inside a rice bag in the Moyiba community on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
The discovery was reportedly brought to the attention of the police by a resident identified as Mohamed Foday Kabba. Following the report, police officers were deployed to the location, where they secured the weapons and commenced preliminary inquiries.
The condition of the rifles suggests that they may have been buried for an extended period. Some community members have speculated that the weapons could date back to the period of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) conflict and the deployment of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in Sierra Leone.
However, the origin, ownership and circumstances surrounding the burial of the firearms have not been established. Police investigations are expected to determine how the weapons came to be buried at the site and whether they are connected to any past or recent criminal activity.
The Sierra Leone Police has continued to urge members of the public to promptly report the discovery of suspicious firearms, ammunition or other potentially dangerous items to the authorities.
The public is also advised not to touch, move or otherwise interfere with suspected weapons, as doing so could pose serious safety risks and potentially compromise an investigation.
