The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has moved to establish the circumstances surrounding a construction incident at the Freetown International Airport that claimed two lives and left two others injured.

The Ministry launched an investigation on Friday, 14 August 2026, following the incident at the construction site, with a team led by Ing. Osman Conteh tasked with determining what led to the tragedy.

According to preliminary findings, the victims included one Sierra Leonean and one Senegalese national. Two other people survived and are currently receiving medical treatment at Life Care Hospital in Freetown.

The investigation team has met with key stakeholders as it works to establish the full facts surrounding the incident. FB Group, the company responsible for construction works at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre, was engaged to obtain information relevant to the investigation.

The Ministry said the team will assess the circumstances of the incident and examine workplace safety measures and compliance with existing labour regulations.

It is also expected to identify any safety gaps and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents at construction sites.

As part of its response, the investigation team visited the family of the deceased Sierra Leonean to convey the Ministry’s condolences and discuss compensation in line with Sierra Leone’s labour laws.

The Ministry said the engagement ensured that the rights and entitlements of the deceased worker are properly addressed while providing support to the bereaved family.

With construction sites posing significant risks to workers and the public, the Ministry is expected to pay particular attention to safety procedures, protective equipment, supervision and compliance with workplace regulations as the investigation progresses.

The Ministry has stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that further details will be made public after the findings and recommendations have been completed.

Officials say the outcome is expected to provide clarity on the incident and help strengthen workplace safety measures to reduce the risk of similar tragedies in the future.
