The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) will commemorate the United Nations International Day of Police Cooperation on Monday, 7 September 2026, at the Bank Complex on Battery Street in Kingtom, Freetown. The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 AM.
This year’s observance carries the theme: “Strengthening Partnership for Effective Policing and Safer Communities.”
The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of Police Cooperation to be observed annually on 7 September, recognising the critical role of law enforcement in global security and peace.
The date holds historical significance as it marks the creation of INTERPOL’s predecessor, the International Criminal Police Commission, in 1923. The observance underscores the need to strengthen international cooperation across global, regional, and sub-regional levels to combat transnational crime, organised crime, and terrorism.
In previous UN messages for this observance, Secretary-General António Guterres has commended law enforcement worldwide for their dedication to peace, security, and justice, highlighting that through sharing best practices, intelligence, and resources, police forces enhance collective ability to confront crime and ensure safety. The principles underpinning police cooperation—accountability, transparency, and respect for diversity—are essential to building trust between police and the communities they serve.
The SLP has been taking steps to modernise its operations and strengthen partnerships. Recent developments include a comprehensive review of the Police Act to reflect modern policing needs, a process driven by Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu and described as a milestone in the evolution of the force. Additionally, the force has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Blood Bank and Dental Clinic at the Police Hospital in Kingtom as part of broader efforts to improve healthcare services and staff welfare.
Monday’s event at the Bank Complex will bring together police officials, government representatives, and stakeholders to reinforce commitments to building safer communities through strengthened partnerships. Organisers have invited the public to “Be Part of Stronger Partnerships for Safer Communities.”
