Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has donated a multi-patient oxygen generator to the Julius Maada Bio Paediatric Centre of Excellence (JMBPCE) to strengthen emergency and critical care services as the hospital prepares to increase its bed capacity and utilization.
The oxygen generator produces 30 litres of oxygen per minute, with the capacity to support up to 10 patients simultaneously, making it a significant addition to the hospital’s Emergency Room (ER), where critically ill children frequently require immediate oxygen therapy.
The device also offers operational advantages by replacing multiple smaller oxygen concentrators, thereby simplifying maintenance and improving efficiency.
Speaking during the handover, Dr. Dinsie Williams, Biomedical Engineering Consultant at the Directorate of Hospital and Ambulance Services, expressed appreciation to MSF for its continued support to hospitals across Sierra Leone. She noted that this is part of MSF’s ongoing contribution to strengthening oxygen availability in healthcare facilities.
Dr. Williams explained that all medical equipment received by the hospital is functionally tested before deployment, ensuring safety and reliability. She further highlighted that a single multi-patient oxygen generator can replace approximately four conventional oxygen concentrators.

Representing MSF, Agnes Dama, MSF Country Director and Medical Coordinator, expressed satisfaction that the equipment arrived safely and was confirmed to be in good working condition. She highlighted MSF’s continued support to JMBPCE and other health facilities, noting that MSF has previously supported the hospital as well as the oxygen plant and ICU at Connaught Hospital. She also disclosed that MSF recently provided spare parts for the Connaught Hospital oxygen plant and reaffirmed MSF’s readiness to support JMBPCE as needs arise under its emergency support plan.
The donation reinforces the shared commitment of the Ministry of Health and partners to ensuring that critically ill children have timely access to essential oxygen therapy and quality emergency care.
