Sierra Leone are set to be without key forward Mustapha Bundu for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after the player suffered a thigh injury while playing for German side Hannover 96.
Bundu was forced off in the 13th minute of Hannover’s 2-2 draw with Karlsruher after attempting a shot.
The 29-year-old received treatment from Hannover team doctor Hauke Mommsen and physiotherapist Rick Schaller before being substituted after it was determined that he could not continue.
Hannover later confirmed that an MRI scan had revealed a structural muscle injury with tendon involvement, with the club saying Bundu is expected to be out for several weeks.
“Dear Mus, we are keeping our fingers crossed for a speedy recovery and are already looking forward to seeing you back on the pitch!” Hannover said in a message to the Sierra Leone international.
The injury is a significant setback for Sierra Leone, with Bundu expected to miss both of the Leone Stars’ upcoming AFCON qualifying matches.
Bundu captained Sierra Leone in their recent friendly matches against Liberia and has emerged as an important player under new head coach Didier Gomes da Rosa.
His absence will leave Gomes da Rosa without one of the team’s most experienced attacking options as Sierra Leone continue their campaign to qualify for the continental tournament.
Last season, Bundu made 22 appearances with 9 goal contributions for Hannover 96.
Bundu has 23 caps for the Leone Stars –finding the net four times.
